Some partnerships just make sense. When the country’s leading solar utility provider and the world’s largest exporter of potatoes come together, you know something big is happening.
At KarmSolar, we’re constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible for energy in Egypt. And now, with Daltex on board as our newest partner in the Farafra Solar Grid, we’re taking things to the next level.
From 3.2 MVA to 8.37 MVA: A Grid That’s Growing Fast
When we launched the Farafra Solar Grid in 2023, we knew it had the potential to transform the region. This wasn’t your average solar farm; it was Egypt’s first-ever micro-grid of its kind, combining a set-up of solar PV, battery storage systems, and generators to form a fully-independent grid for clients in off-grid areas.
Now, thanks to Daltex, along with Al-Mazare' for Food Manufacturing and Cooling and Al Hoda for Land Rehabilitation and Cultivation, we’re nearly tripling our contracted energy supply, jumping from 3.2 MVA to 8.37 MVA.
More power means more businesses can ditch diesel as their primary energy source and switch to clean energy. It means farmers and food producers get a reliable, cost-effective power source that helps them focus on growing their business instead of worrying about electricity shortages.
Why This Matters: A Smarter Way to Power Agribusiness
Egypt’s agribusiness sector relies on massive amounts of energy, and much of it is needed at night. That’s been a challenge for solar power in the past, but not anymore. With our centralized electricity model, companies like Daltex can finally access clean energy around the clock, without the hassle of managing their own power stations.
And Daltex isn’t just any agribusiness; they manage 40% of our targeted agricultural landscape in Farafra (64,000 acres of farmland). By choosing to switch to solar, Daltex is sending a clear message to the entire industry: the era of costly, unreliable, and unsustainable energy is over.
The End Goal: 100% Solar in Farafra
For us, this expansion isn’t just about adding more capacity. We’re building toward a future where the Farafra Solar Grid runs 100% on solar energy. That’s the big picture. That’s where we’re headed.
Ahmed Zahran, CEO & Co-founder of KarmSolar, says it best:
“Our partnership with Daltex marks another step toward achieving this vision, ensuring that power availability and reliability are never again an issue for Daltex or the Farafra region.”
What’s Next?
We’re not stopping here. Phase 1 of the Farafra Solar Grid kicked off with EGP 83M in debt financing from HSBC, helping us set up a 3.4 MWp solar PV station, 3.7 MVA diesel generators, and a 4 MWh/1 MW battery energy storage system (BESS).
But we’re already looking ahead; because 60% solar penetration is great, but 100% is the goal.
With Daltex paving the way, we expect to see even more agribusinesses following suit. Because when solar power is cheaper, more reliable, and better for the environment, what’s stopping them?
